Here I am in 8th grade, with my pet rat named HERO clinging to my shirt.

Doug and Hero the rat

This picture is what it means to be an awkward teen. As if the bowl cut wasn’t enough, I was about to go through two years of torment where I would grow another 9 inches in height. Behind me is a key to the universe.

Fast forward another 30 years and I created one of the most popular video game characters of all time, married the best woman I’ve ever met and I grew into my 6’8″ after all. The contrast of this stupid, naïve kid who loved rats and a middle aged man is where I started the journey for RATFIST.

After making 10 graphic novels I thought it would be a good time to try the medium of the on-line comic. I’ve watched Ethan Nicolle tear the internet apart with AXECOP for the last year and he makes it look so easy.

It’s been a while since I goofed around with the dorky hero genre of Earthworm Jim, and I wanted to return to that world and those fans to give them a modern take on absurdist humour.

After finishing three digital graphic novels, I needed to go back to the old ink and brush. I didn’t know exactly how Ratfist would turn out, but I knew it was going to be wild. I wanted ink to be splattered everywhere! This is all drawn using Japanese Sumi ink with a coarse bamboo and horsehair brush with a little detail work filled in by my trusty Windsor Newton Series 7.

Most of all, I’m excited about the daily publishing format. I’ve never put up a page then found out what everyone thought of just that increment of the story. The comments section are a huge part of Ratfist, this is where YOU become part of the entertainment. Don’t be a troll, but do chime in. There’s going to be a lot to talk about so let’s have some fun!

Get your rat ear on, kid!
